Historical Linguistics

Historical linguistics is the study of how languages change over time—in their sounds, word meanings, grammar, and vocabulary—and how different languages are related to one another through common ancestry. Linguists compare related languages, like French, Spanish, and Italian, to reconstruct earlier "parent" languages, such as Latin, that are no longer spoken. This field helps explain both why languages that seem very different today (like English and Hindi) actually share deep historical roots, and why languages that started out the same eventually diverge.
