Is there one proven ideal session length?
No. Many pages state a specific number, often 25 minutes or 45 minutes, as though one figure suited every subject and every learner. One group followed a fixed pattern: 12 minutes of reading, then a 3-minute break, repeated. The other group chose when to pause and for how long. The two groups scored about the same on the comprehension test that followed: 12.93 for the fixed-block group against 12.23 for the self-regulated group, a difference the study's own analysis treated as not significant.

A comprehension test that followed the reading task showed no significant difference between the two groups, t(174) = 1.60, p = 0.056. A Bayesian analysis of the same data found anecdotal-to-moderate evidence for no real difference between the groups.
The felt experience did differ
Students in the self-regulated group reported higher energy, higher concentration and higher motivation to study, and less distraction, than students in the fixed-break group. The authors' own framing treats this as a caution against assuming a popular, rigid method transfers its reputation into an actual score.
