How many times should you reread something

Does a plain second read help?
A little, on a test given right away, and less than most readers expect on a test given later. A 2013 review of ten study techniques placed rereading in its lowest group, next to highlighting and underlining, summarisation, the keyword mnemonic, and imagery use for text learning. The review's authors did not find that rereading harms a reader. They found that the gain is small and unreliable, and that the same minutes spent producing an answer from memory return far more.
Does the gap between two reads matter?
Yes, and the direction of the effect flips depending on when you test. Greving and Richter (2019) had seventh-graders reread a science text either straight away or one week after the first read; each student was then tested only once, either a few minutes or a week after the reread. Among the students tested a few minutes later, the massed group scored higher on free recall (M = 3.86) than the distributed group (M = 2.56). Among the students tested a week later, the massed group scored lower (M = 1.79) than the distributed group (M = 2.34); the paper reports that this later difference was small and not statistically significant.

No confirmed source gives one fixed number of reads that fits every text and every reader. The pattern that holds up best across the evidence above is not a specific count of reads; it is a single read, a self-test, and a delay before any further exposure to the text.
What should you do instead of a third or a fourth read?
- Read the passage once, all the way through, at a normal pace.
- Close the text. Try to recall its main points without looking.
- Write down, or say aloud, the parts you could not recall.
- Wait at least a day before you look at the text again. A week works even better for a long or a complex passage.
- Reread only the parts you missed, then test yourself once more.
This sequence turns a reread from a full repeat of the text into a small, targeted repair of one gap. It also costs less time than a full second read, because you skip the parts you already have.

A one-week gap changed which group forgot more
Greving and Richter (2019) worked with 191 seventh-grade students across eight classes in three German schools. Twenty students missed a learning session and were excluded; a further 26 missed the test or a check of prior knowledge, which left 145 students in the analysis of free recall (massed and tested soon after, 45 students; massed and tested a week later, 36 students; distributed and tested soon after, 38 students; distributed and tested a week later, 26 students). Each student reread a text about the bacterial cell, either immediately after the first read or one week later, and each student was tested only once. Students tested soon after a massed reread scored higher on free recall than students tested soon after a distributed reread. Students tested a week after a massed reread scored lower than students tested a week after a distributed reread, though the paper reports this later difference as small and not statistically significant.
Where rereading sits among ten study techniques
Dunlosky and four colleagues (2013) reviewed ten common study techniques for Psychological Science in the Public Interest and placed rereading in the lowest of three groups, alongside highlighting and underlining, summarisation, the keyword mnemonic, and imagery use for text learning. Distributed practice and practice testing sat in the highest group.
Why a gap between exposures helps in general
A 2006 meta-analysis of 254 studies and 14,811 participants found 47.3% correct recall after spaced study, against 36.7% after massed study. That meta-analysis covers spaced practice broadly, and not rereading alone, but it explains why a one-week gap between two reads changed the outcome in the classroom study above.

Is one read ever enough?
For a short or a familiar passage, one read plus a self-test can be enough. No study gives a fixed number of reads that applies to every passage and every reader.
Does rereading ever help?
Yes, when it targets a gap you found through a self-test, and when a gap of a day or more sits between the first read and the reread. A reread with no gap and no target adds the least.
What if I do not have a week before a test?
The study above tested an immediate reread against a one-week gap, and not a one-day gap, so this page does not claim a confirmed result for one day. Any gap you can manage, combined with a self-test, is a reasonable substitute for no gap at all.
