ChemistryThe Periodic Table
The periodic table is a chart that organizes all known chemical elements—the basic substances like oxygen, iron, and gold that everything is made of—according to their properties. Elements are arranged by atomic number (the number of protons in an atom) so that elements with similar chemical behavior line up in the same columns, called groups. This layout lets scientists predict how an element will react just by looking at where it sits on the chart.
