How to use AI to study without cheating

What does an AI study tool do well?
An AI study tool answers in seconds, at any hour, on almost any subject you name. It can rephrase a stuck sentence at a simpler level, work through the steps of a method, or give a second explanation when the first one from your course did not land. A 2026 global survey of 45,398 responses, from 27,284 students and 18,114 faculty, across 35 countries, found AI use spreading through courses: 15% of students said AI is integrated into many of their courses, and 43% said a few.
The same survey found a more careful picture underneath that use. Among students who had experienced AI inside an actual course, only 5% said it had "transformed" how they learn, 28% said it "enhances" their learning, 42% called it only somewhat helpful, and 24% saw no clear value. A tool that appears inside a course is not the same claim as a tool that students trust with the whole task.
What does an AI study tool get wrong?
An AI model produces its most confident-sounding sentence for a question it does not know the answer to, in the same voice it uses for a question it answers correctly. Nothing in its output marks the difference. A 2025 study tested this directly: across five experiments it asked human participants and one or more of four language models to judge their own performance on a task, before and after seeing the real result.
- Confident but wrong
- A model states a false fact in the same tone, and often the same fluent style, as a true one. The tone gives you no signal about which sentence to check.
One experiment showed 164 human participants, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude Haiku the same 25 hand-drawn sketches and asked for a guess at each one. The model Gemini predicted it would name 10.03 of the 25 correctly. It named 0.93 correct, a result the paper calls significantly worse than the human participants' own accuracy. Asked afterward how many it thought it had got right, Gemini estimated 14.40, a higher guess than its own prediction before the task. The paper reports that the human participants became better calibrated after the task than before it, while ChatGPT and Gemini became less well calibrated after the task than before it.
Where is the line between using AI and cheating?
This guide draws no single line, because no single line applies everywhere. A school, a course and a single assignment each set their own rule, and the rules disagree with each other: one course allows an AI tool for a first draft and forbids it for a final answer; another forbids any AI text inside a graded submission; a third asks you to name which parts of your work an AI tool touched. - If you are stuck at one point, ask the AI tool to explain that one point, and not the whole task.

An AI model does not reliably know when it is wrong
Cash and Oppenheimer's 2025 study, published in Memory & Cognition, ran five experiments that compared human participants against three or four language models (ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude Haiku in most of them, with Claude Sonnet added later) on tasks such as a sports-prediction task and the sketch-naming game above. The paper states that human participants became better calibrated after a task than before it, while ChatGPT and Gemini became less well calibrated after a task than before it. That gap is the direct reason to verify an AI explanation before you rely on it for a grade.
